Dans ce passage du livre d'Esaïe, le prophète décrit comment il a enduré la souffrance et la persécution avec une détermination inébranlable. Il raconte qu'il a été frappé, insulté et qu'on lui a craché dessus, mais qu'il est resté inébranlable, sachant que Dieu lui donnerait raison. Ce texte, qui fait partie de la deuxième partie du livre d'Esaïe pendant l'exil à Babylone, met l'accent sur le rôle du "Serviteur" qui fait face à l'oppression tout en conservant sa dignité et sa foi. Le passage souligne que le fait d'endurer la persécution avec fierté reflète l'engagement d'une personne sur la voie de Dieu. Il est en parallèle avec la lecture de l'Évangile où Pierre reconnaît Jésus comme le Christ, qui doit souffrir et mourir dans le cadre de sa mission messianique, remettant en cause les attentes conventionnelles en matière de messianité.
